02 - Waka Whetu - Matariki Celebration
For my third-year project, Tuhura Otago Museum and I worked together to develop their Matariki event, together with the other members of the third-year design cohort. I ended up going into the film part as we were divided into groups to concentrate on different aspects of the event. Then, we learned that the enormous 180-degree planetarium will screen the final film. This required a significant amount of planning and learning on the part of both us and the lecturers. We agreed that each of us would select a star and make a one-minute film for that star in our own unique styles. I fixed my attention on the wind star, Ururaki. I learned a great deal about Ururaki and the entirety of Matariki. Growing up immersed by Māori culture, I already knew a lot about Matariki, but the deep dive I conducted helped me connect even more with this part of myself.
It was my first time attempting animation. All of the components I intended to use were manually carved, and I then inserted and manipulated them in Adobe After Effects. I had a lot of fun teaching myself how to do this.
